10:00 PANEL DISCUSSION

Beyond Digitization: Universities as Drivers or Observers of the Digital Transformation?

Ever since its origin, the idea of the university was not only devoted to describing and explaining the world, but also to exploring new ways of solving problems, of working, living – and thinking. Therefore, it seems natural that the university plays a key role within the digital transformation. While the impact of universities on the transformation is undisputed – many successful entrepreneurs and their high potential employees benefit from their university degrees, it seems that universities are still struggling with finding their role in the new game. For good reasons, they are inspired by Aristotle’s postulate to regard recognition as an end in itself. Therefore, many members of today’s universities do not feel comfortable with entrepreneurship, since it is regarded as being driven primarily by economic motives. However, in recent years, more and more universities realized that the digital transformation offers an excellent opportunity to effectively disseminate foundational ideas of science into society, such as intellectual curiosity and creativity, criticism, rationality and the belief into progress that makes the world a better place. But it is far from trivial to develop an idea of how the university could transform itself to become a driver of the societal transformation – not by sacrificing its roots, but by re-interpreting them in a changing world. Against this background, the panel is aimed at discussing the future role of the university, which includes its relations to other key players such as founders, investors and governments.

Scientific Entrepreneurship: Experiences at University of Oxford – Value and Future Role of Entrepreneurship for Academic Institutions

This session will review the development and experiences of scientific entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford. We will not only draw on our experiences in this field over the last 30 years at Oxford, but also on the last decade of experiences from supporting scientific entrepreneurship activities within academic environments from our consulting work in other parts of the world. We will summarise lessons learnt to date and give our views on the future role and value of entrepreneurship for academic institutions.
