Every good CEO knows that he/she may need to raise money through the lifecycle of the company. But the needs and challenges of the company change from stage to stage, and the sources and uses of funds change accordingly. This workshop will focus on how to raise money during each stage of the company. Using recent, relevant examples, we will discuss companies that have been successful, and others that have not been successful in raising capital. We will discuss how professional investors look at such investments in each stage, what they look for, as well as current market trends. We will further discuss the specific parameters that are most important during each stage.

SUPPORTERS:
Well-established enterprises have well-established routines: What kind of stories do we communicate? How do we communicate them? When do we communicate them? And they have specialized units that take care of these operations. Start-ups have neither. Media relations for start-ups are not rocket science – they are craftsmanship.
Their big advantage: Large corporations often find their communicators, channels and stories stored and spread in historically grown corporate silos. In contrast to them, start-ups are faster and more mobile. Start-ups are, thanks to their slim structure, predestined to think in stories and narratives rather than in bureaucratic, self-referential and worn-out structures: They are capable of modern storytelling, spontaneous communication and of quickly establishing relations with the media.
In this workshop, you’ll get best practice examples on how to make a story out of your issues, on how to convert these stories into essential content suitable for various channels – with only a small budget. And we’ll discuss some of your individual cases to find solutions for your start-up.
Dominik Sinnreich is the founder and CEO of Newsroom GmbH- the first Owned Media company in Austria. He designs and produces content for corporations, NGOs, the public sector – and he consults these institutions on implementing corporate newsroom structures. He spent ten years in journalism, working for the Austrian daily „Kurier“ and the current affairs magazine „Report“ (ORF). Most recently, he was head of the politics desk of private TV station „PULS4“. Sinnreich teaches TV journalism and newsroom organization at FHWien University of Applied Sciences and PR for start-ups at APA Campus.

– powered by myveeta
3 Fragen. 2 Minuten. Viele Kontakte. Konkrete Anfragen.

While the assessment of the market potential of an innovation can be supported by well-known approaches to market research, the assessment of the technical feasibility is much more difficult. This applies in particular to innovations that are presented as a result of new scientific findings. The assessment of new scientific knowledge can be very difficult and thus, can lead to significant misjudgments.

“Great CEOs face the pain. They deal with the sleepless nights, the cold sweats, and what my friend the great Alfred Chuang (legendary co-founder and CEO of BEA Systems) calls “the torture.” Whenever I meet a successful CEO, I ask them how they did it. Mediocre CEOs point to their brilliant strategic moves or their intuitive business sense or a variety of other self-congratulatory explanations. Great CEOs tend to be remarkably consistent in their answers. They all say, “I didn’t quit.” ‘’ Ben Horowitz, author The Hard Thing About Hard Things
Being a first-time founder has its blessings and its courses. During this session, we want to talk about the realistic goals of embarking on the exciting and challenging journey of starting your first business. Especially if you have been working in the academia for the past years and you want right now to make the leap and start your own company based on your research results, you will have a better experience starting a spinout if you are armed with some expectations about your likely journey. Spinning-out requires a clear time and usually also money commitment, and its success highly depends on the founder team’s passion, irrational optimism and deep faith the technology they’ve developed. From writing their first business plan to their first investment and scaling up, 4 founders from 4 different TU Wien- affiliated companies in different stages share their experience with transforming their research into successful products or services.

The most successful ventures are founded by entrepreneurial teams rather than individual entrepreneurs, but a large founder team can be problematic as well. In the special case of establishing a university spin-out, the number of founders is likely to be higher, the team members fulfill various roles and have a different level of commitment to the day-to-day running of the company. As a provider of resources and permissions, you can expect the university to become a significant shareholder as well. Splitting the equity equally among university and/or founder researchers might be detrimental to the spin-out in the long-run. So how to make sure everyone gets his/her fair share of equity?
This workshop covers important topics like the size of the shareholding, how to split founder equity dos and don’ts and possible consequences, how to tackle founders who don’t commit 100% or want to continue their academic path as well as provide you with some tools to ease the process of splitting the founder’s pie.
At the end of the workshop you will:

Entrepreneurship is both an attitude and a mindset. It’s about passion and doing what you love. It’s about creating value and gaining independence. It’s about challenge, risk, persistence, and the ability to innovate – to improve on the old or invent the new. It is not for those who hate ambiguity or want everything in black and white. It is for the self-motivated, independent, persistent individual who has a sense of humor and can learn and bounce back from adversity. We will further discuss how to start and manage a business, develop and validate a concept, recruit a team, fund the organization, and grow the company.
The workshop traces new venture creation from idea generation and validation through opportunity recognition, development, and monetization. We will examine how to determine if a specific concept merits in-depth feasibility assessment and gain a conceptual understanding of the entrepreneurial process as a whole, including topics such as testing/adapting a business concept, defining a market entry strategy, understanding the target market, developing a business model, as well as sources and uses of capital and financing an enterprise.
This workshops is held by a Venture Capitalist from the US and focuses strongly on the US market.
At the end of this workshop, you will have an initial understanding of how to identify opportunities, how to form your core team and understand your target market

The success of any valuable product is not just a function of its efficacy, but of a complex business operation influenced by the interaction of the product with users and customers. That being said, the process of turning a new scientific solution into a product is rarely straightforward. Simple practices and linear processes don’t do it’s justice – they regularly lead to false assessments, failure, and frustration. Product Thinking is a mindset and methodology that addresses this situation. It treats product innovation as a complex system and aims to maximize its positive impact on all stakeholders. The Product Field helps you with that: It’s a model, a canvas and a toolbox to develop better products and increase your capacity for innovation. In this workshop, you will be introduced to the Product Field’s core ideas and learn how to use it to augment and enhance our Product Thinking and persistently improve collaboration.
After the workshop you’ll be able to:
– navigate the context your product will be build and used in
– methodically hone the value proposition of your product
– identify risks and potential for improvement

This workshop is inspired by the course “Research as design” at Stanford University. According to our research (Cravens et al., 2014; Ulibarri et. al, 2014), productive, confident and motivated researchers need three things: analytical skills, creative confidence and emotional well-being. This is exactly what this workshop is about.
The goal of this workshop is to recognize the creative, playful mindset that underlies successful innovation in scholarship and explore how design thinking can improve the research process to make us more innovative scholars or scientists. And with this, to increase the ability of researchers to create quality research and a systematic application of creativity in their own research development. Especially because emerging scholars and interdisciplinary researchers need tools, techniques, support, and inspiration to approach their research in an innovative and playful spirit of design.
Participants will explore a variety of design skills and mindsets, but focus especially on how being mindful of your own research process, work styles, emotional state, and sometimes-hidden assumptions can help you get “unstuck” when facing research bumps in the road. The instructor seeks to help participants to explore potential solutions to problems in their research efforts.
Learning outcomes:
During this workshop, participants will gain…
Creative confidence
…with tools, techniques and inspiration for an innovative mindset
…to improve their research process
…to make themselves more innovative scholars
…to “unstuck” in times of research blocks
Problem-solving abilities
…reflecting, iterating and tolerating ambiguity
…refining questions, processes, and methods, viewing setbacks as opportunities for further learning
…highlighting the creative process of scholarly research
…combining analytical skills and creative intelligence
Emotional well-being
…being proactive about emotional needs (as it leads to greater productivity)
…creating a social-support network (academic, non-academic)
…creative a supportive, non-judgmental environment
…work in tandems and experience peer-coaching
Participants will have the opportunity to apply design thinking tools and methods to their own research projects, creating prototypes of their research papers, understanding the importance of an iterative process and seeking feedback to further develop their research.

Get support for your project from a community of innovators and entrepreneurs of TU and WU. Present either your start-up or your first idea in a relaxed setting and without pressure. At Joint Forces you have the opportunity to attract the attention of interested co-founders, employees and mentors. The feedback from the community can provide the decisive impulse for the next step.
3 START-UPS – Already founded start-ups, which have provided their proof-of-concept, are pitching and looking for employees, valuable contacts or investors.
3 PROJECTS – Without guidelines or specifications, future founders are presenting their project ideas to get some feedback and perhaps even get to know future co-founders.
3 SHOUT-OUTS – Everyone has the chance to make a brief request, an event announcement or whatever. No feedback, no questions – who wants to know more, has to ask for details during the networking afterwards.
