Winner: DataRobot

DataRobot™ employs innovative Natural Language Processing (NLP) & Machine Learning (ML) Algorithms to analyze privacy statements, terms & conditions, and internal docs to check firms’ degree of compliance with the EU- General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The algorithms are trained by the concepts and legal requirements contained in the GDPR, so that they can identify and extract specific sentences with greater speed, accuracy and at lower cost. The EU GDPR 2016/679 is applicable to firms of all sizes and the EU promises a vigorous enforcement culture. We have identified three B2B markets; (1) Firms data compliance personnel who are responsible for making sure their practices are in line with the GDPR. (2) Legal firms who work with clients’ data protection practices, (3) Data management consultants.

Innovation Award (Ticket for the Pioneers Festival 2017)
Winners: Tetragon

Tetragon is developing an innovative Braille reader that will be small and nevertheless be capable of showing long lines of text. This is achieved by a ground-breaking technology which presents the Braille characters on the inside of a rotating ring. The reader will slide his/her finger as usual along a line thus stetting the ring into rotation. While reading text at the bottom of the ring, characters in the upper half of the ring are updated to show new text. A first (enlarged) prototype was successfully developed in two diploma theses and a patent is pending.

Best Overall Concept: participation in a 3-week accelerator program in Tel Aviv (sponsored by GIN/goInternational)
Winner: CellView

In our project, we currently develop new visualization technology for depicting microscopic organisms, as well as new methods for nanotechnology modeling in collaboration with partners such as the Allen Institute, the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT). Our main product will be a software package consisting of a visualization framework for modeling and rendering complex models of biological structures such as cells, cell organelles, bacteria, viruses, or DNA origami, conveying details on several scales, and across multiple orders of magnitude. Our startup will provide services to our customers in the form of custom tailored solutions and extensions to our core visualization and modeling platform. Such a custom application will utilize the framework to create interactive scientific visualizations, storytelling animations, and similar visual content based on biological measurements and simulation data. Our vision is to create interactive 3D visualizations of living cells and dynamic nano structures at atomistic detail that allows observers to explore, learn about and create within the nanocosmos.

Commercial Viability Award: Pitch at the Austrian Angel Investment Association – aaia
Winner: Huber Scientific

Huber Scientific develops novel solutions for experimental equipment used in the fields of Electrochemistry and Solid State Ionics. These innovative setups not only enable completely new experiments, but also allow for the first time a combination of different, complementary methods. Huber Scientific will also supply completely new designed and improved test equipment for standardized measurements, which is much easier to repair, simpler to use and much cheaper than other test stations already available on the market. Up until now, research groups worldwide had to develop and build their own measurement equipment since for many experiments no commercial setups were available. This often resulted in makeshift equipment of varying quality with no long term support. With years of experience in designing high quality and easy to use and upkeep experimental equipment, Huber Scientific will help research groups all over the world to focus on what they are doing best: Delivering top notch science.

Awards given at the i²c StartAcademy 2016

The teams which have been "surviving" the 3 days bootcamp style i²c StartAcademy - where trainers and mentors were lecturing and supportive in different subjects - competed in the Pitch Challenge taking place at day 4 of the event, the i²c NetworkFriday. Potential Spin-Off projects were presented to a jury of renowned representatives of the Austrian business angel and investor scene. Among the prizes for the winners of the pitch challenge were:

  • a place in the TU Wien i²ncubator & Founder Space
  • the i²c Award: Scholarship in the amount of € 5,000 for the commercialization of a high potential PhD-project (launched 2014 by Informatics Innovation Center)
  • participation in the INiTS Startup Camp (worth € 6,000)
  • the StartupLeitner Award: € 5,000 voucher for tax consulting
  • a WKO Pitching-Workshop with Steve Austin (San Francisco)

BYRD won the place in the TUW i²nkubator and an office space at TUW Founder Space as well as the StartupLeitner Award. Evologic was awarded the i²c Award. CrysPi and Jumpy won a place in the INiTS Startup Camp. JustMe was awarded the Pitching-Workshop. The presentations convinced the jury so much that two of the jury members decided spontaneously to award two further prizes: Startup300 offered JustMe due to the great interest a potential investment of € 10,000 after an additional competitive analysis and FearlessLife won a CONDA Crowdinvesting Consulting Package.

- Incubation & Office Space: TU Wien i²nkubator & Founder Space sponsored by The Innovation Incubation Center (i²c)
Winner: byrd

byrd is a logistics startup that allows customers to ship items via smartphone or via the byrd web app. They take care of pickup, packaging and shipment of the item at the best available rate. From now on, going to the post office is a thing of the past. Send items from your living room anytime you want.

i²c Award: Scholarship in the amount of € 5,000 for the commercialization of a high potential PhD-project (launched 2014 by Informatics Innovation Center)
Winner: Evologic

Bioprocess development to enable the economic use of fungi for natural yield increase in agriculture. Currently industrial agriculture allows pesticides to our plates while spoiling our environment with excess fertilizer. Nature actually has a solution: AMF - a symbiotic fungi. In symbiosis with crop plants AMF can decrease fertilizer and pesticide demand. But current AMF Products are simply too expensive. We as Evologic technologies are developing a scalable bioprocess which leads to significant cost reduction for the production of AMF. Achieving this goal will render the usage of AMF an imperative from an economic and an ecologic point of view - for the sake of our food and our environment.

INiTS Startup Camp (worth € 6,000)
Winners: Jumpy & Crispi

Jumpy – A simulator for flying in virtual environments. The Jumpcube gives you wings. It allows you to jump out of a plane, fly through the air like a bird, dive down into the sea and fight with the creatures of the dark. It allows you to travel through space and time. All this in virtual reality with free body movement, enriched by touch and smell.

CrysPi – Production of high-performance-polymers (polyimides) of outstanding crystallinity. High-performance polymers (HPPs) are plastics of outstanding mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. They find use in applications where low weight matters and demanding conditions arise, e.g., in aviation, space technology and microelectronics. The exceptional materials properties of HPPs increase with crystallinity. We have developed a technique to prepare a highly important type of HPPs – polyimides (PIs) – of unprecedented crystallinity. In addition, our technique is much less harmful than conventional preparations for PIs: we use nothing but water, heat and the starting chemicals. Crystalline PIs would allow for generating even better performing HPP materials for numerous high-end applications. With CRYSPI, we envision to manufacture outstandingly crystalline and thus stable polyimides by our novel environmentally friendly procedure.
